Overall Upgrade Strategy
Canadian Beaver is war clan. All members are expected to upgrade heroes, troops, spells and structures in a manner that makes them the strongest players in war. This guide covers the fundamental strategy to accomplish this. If this is not your priority and you would rather focus on building your army and base to farm more effectively or defend against regular multi-player attacks, then this is not the guide nor is it the clan for you.
Rushing
Although many players do it, rushing your town hall upgrade before maxing all your heroes, troops, spells and structures has many downsides and very little benefits for both war and regular game play.
When you attack in regular game play to get resources, there is a penalty for attacking bases with town halls lower than your own as per the following table:

When you attack in regular game play to get resources, there is a penalty for attacking bases with town halls lower than your own as per the following table:
Town Hall Level
Difference |
Percentage of Loot
Available |
Same or higher level |
100% |
1 level lower |
80% |
2 levels lower |
50% |
3 levels lower |
25% |
4 or more levels lower |

This makes it much more challenging to raid for resources the higher your town hall level especially if your army, spells and heroes are at a lower level because you rushed. Furthermore, it becomes easier for other players to raid your base for resources if you upgraded your town hall before maxing your defences. If it's harder for you to loot, and easier for you to lose resources, it becomes that much more difficult overall to afford the ever increasing cost of upgrades meaning you are stuck in this "rushed" state for even longer.
Lastly, these same principles make it more difficult for rushed bases to be effective in wars. Your attacks are not as strong against similar Town Hall level bases and you can be 3 starred easier.
SO DON'T RUSH! Rushers may be excluded from war and/or booted from the clan.
Preparing for your next Town Hall level
While your Town Hall is upgrading to the next level, be sure to “farm” extensively and fill all of your storages to the max. Once your Town Hall has completed the upgrade, you now have many new important upgrades to complete. Having full storages will jump start your upgrade program.
Our clan doesn't care about trophies. The only purpose trophies serve is to keep you at a level in the game where you can find resource rich bases to attack in order to fund your own upgrades. The level of trophies you should maintain really depends on your town hall level and the types of attacks you like to use in regular multi-player gameplay. However, generally TH5 players should be in bronze league, TH6 in silver, TH7 in gold, TH8 in gold III or crystal I, TH9+ in gold III or above. At these levels you will generally find the most bases you can successfully attack to steal a generous amount of loot.
Overall Upgrade Order
The war matching formula takes into account the level of every member's heroes, troops, spells, defensive structures and walls when finding an "evenly matched" opponent for us. However, when ranking each individual base on the war map, the formula only considers defensive structures, walls and heroes, NOT spells, troops or army capacity. Therefore, if you have strong defenses but weak troops, you will be ranked high on the map and face tough enemies but have a relatively weak army and struggle to 3-star.
Furthermore, non-defensive structures such as your collectors, barracks and storages seem to have little to no impact on how you are ranked or the matching formula overall. Therefore, it is beneficial to upgrade your troops, spells and non-defensive structures first as you will become a stronger attacker facing relatively weaker bases and will have more success 3-starring.
Upon reaching a new town hall level, use the following overall upgrade strategy to ensure that you are strong enough to 3 star enemy bases at your own war map rank (which is the goal for every member).
Once you have maxed all your heroes, troops, spells, walls and structures, consider how long you want to enjoy being a maxed and powerful player at your town hall level dominating your enemy and collecting war stars like they were candy on halloween. When you have had your fun and are ready for the next challenge, upgrade your town hall to the next level and repeat the strategy above.

Upon reaching a new town hall level, use the following overall upgrade strategy to ensure that you are strong enough to 3 star enemy bases at your own war map rank (which is the goal for every member).
- First, upgrade your laboratory, spell factories, clan castle, all army camps, one barracks and one dark barracks. This immediately gives you a much stronger army with more troops spaces and new troops and allows you to get your lab working on all the lengthy upgrades you need to complete.
- Second, purchase all new non-defensive structures such as collectors and storages - this adds hit points to your base but does not increase your war map ranking by a significant amount.
- Next focus on getting and or upgrading your heroes by dedicating 1 builder to them full time until they are maxed for your level. Hero upgrades are expensive but worth it as heroes are the single most powerful individual "troops" in your attack. Most 3 star strategies rely on strong heroes in the initial "kill squad" phase of the attack. Far too many players neglect their heroes and therefore significantly weaken their attack capabilities. Although heroes do impact your war map rank, their value in an attack far exceeds the impact on your rank. This can not be stressed enough... UPGRADE YOUR HEROES!!!
- Keep your laboratory busy 24/7. Lab work takes a long time, far longer than upgrading structures. First, upgrade troops and spells that are used in key 3 star attack strategies for your town hall level (see the links below for specific upgrade order guides by town hall level).
- Upgrade the rest of your barracks so that building your army during wars can be done more quickly.
- Upgrade all of your non-defensive structures to max to add more hit points to your base (and increase the amount of resources you generate). Again, this will have a positive impact on your defense without increasing your war map rank that much.
- Upgrade your walls maxing them at each town hall level until TH9. Once you have level 9 walls (available at TH9), upgrading them becomes less of a priority and astronomically expensive making it difficult to complete any other upgrades because your resources are sapped.
- Upgrade your traps and defenses. Although it may seem strange and counterintuitive to upgrade your defenses last, by waiting you help increase the chances we will get a fair match-up in war. The order in which you should upgrade your defenses also varies by each town hall level. Therefore, please see the specific upgrade priority guide for your level.
